Many of us have a refrigerator in our homes, and if you are one of the lucky ones who has just purchased a new fridge, congratulations!
However, it is important to know how to properly clean your appliance.
This will help keep bacteria from building up on the inside of your fridge and make sure that food stays fresh for much longer than normal.
With tips from our disinfection service team from Petaling Jaya, we’ll walk you through 5 easy steps on how to clean your fridge.
Remove All Items In Fridge Before Disinfecting
Before you can start disinfecting your fridge, you need to remove all the items inside.
Don’t forget to empty both shelves and remove any containers or plastic bags that are in your fridge.
Also, you must remember to remove any ice cubes that might be in your freezer.
The next step is the most important and must not be skipped: wipe down all of the food items you’ve taken with a mild disinfectant while fresh produce or vegetables and fruits must be washed.
By doing this, you will be sure that you’ve removed any bacteria from your fridge.
Then, spread out some newspapers or dish towels on the floor of your kitchen to create a work surface for when you start disinfecting the inside of the appliance.
If there is an outside vent, open it and remove filters before continuing with this next step.
Prepare Your Disinfectant
Next, you need to prepare your disinfectant.
Depending on what type of cleaner you’ll be using, follow the instructions provided with it.
For example: if using Clorox or Lysol wipes then allow time for them to dry before continuing and feel free to use gloves while doing so.
If you’re going to be spraying a liquid chlorine bleach solution inside your fridge then make sure that there is plenty of ventilation as this will leave an overpowering smell in your kitchen when sprayed.
Also, please wear protective clothing like long sleeves and rubber gloves during this process just in case any spills occur from cleaning materials or juices from fruit/vegetables which have been washed off earlier.
Melt The Ice In Your Freezer Before Disinfecting
The next step is to melt the ice in your freezer. This prevents any water from getting onto the appliance and damaging it when you take out all of the containers or plastic bags that are inside.
You can do this manually by using a hairdryer, mop bucket filled with hot water, boiling pot or even an electric heater if available.
Do not use a blowtorch as this will be too intense for such small spaces and could easily damage parts of your fridge while also possibly catching on fire!
Once there are no more air bubbles left in your freezer then turn off whatever method you were using to melt the ice so that everything is nice and melted before continuing with these steps below:
Start Disinfecting From Above to Below
The first thing you want to do is start cleaning from the top of your refrigerator and work your way down.
Start by spraying bleach solution on the surface that touches food which will help kill any bacteria or germs leftover in this area, then use a clean cloth to wipe it off with light pressure so as not to push anything around.
Next, take some white vinegar and put it into a spray bottle where you can add water for dilution purposes if needed before adding an equal amount of household ammonia (You can buy these at grocery stores).
Shake vigorously until mixed together well before starting to spray downwards onto all surfaces including walls and shelves except for the one above where we sprayed chlorine previously.
This will disinfect everything that is touched by your hands or sprayed.
The next step involves wiping down the inside of your fridge and freezer with a disinfectant that has been diluted in water, then using some paper towels to dry both areas as we want them to be completely clean before returning any items back into our refrigerator.
Finally, wipe off all surfaces where you’ve placed fruit/vegetables and products so they are sanitized too for when you’ll prepare food again later on!
That’s it – now you’re ready to put everything back inside of your fridge once more!
Be sure not to store anything wet like fresh veggies if possible until after everything dries up well from being washed earlier.
Conclusion
Appliances can be breeding grounds for bacteria, viruses, and fungus. This is especially true of the fridge because it has such a high humidity level.
To ensure that your appliance doesn’t become contaminated, follow these 5 steps to disinfect your refrigerator every month or so.
